Kitty Kilian, Mixed media portrait on panel: three kids, one dog and a sailboat
A birthday gift for a father who loves to sail.
He also loves his three kids and his dog, of course. And his wife, who is not in the picture.
This is a combination of collage (of altered photo’s), painting and drawing on panel. It is not a weekly portrait proper, but sometimes when I am busy I sneak in a commission. Because there are only so many days in a week.
I made the letters using stamps, which I then almost erased and painted over many times in thin layers of acrylic paint.
The quote is from a poem by the Dutch poet C.B. Vaandrager (1962). It says: ‘The croquettes in the restaurant are rather small.’ A running gag in the family portrayed. It is Vaandrager’s most quoted poem and it dates from the 1960s. When I looked into it, it turned out to be one of a cycle of four poems about Madurodam, a miniature city in The Hague. No wonder the croquettes are small.
Would you like me to do your portrait as well? Check this out.
For Dutch readers: I also found this parody by Daan de Ligt here.
made in Madurodam
de croquetten in het restaurant
zijn aan de kleine kant
C.B. Vaandrager
Madurodam maakt grondig korte metten
