This is as far as I got with the blue-eyed boy at the Sterrenwacht. I am not fully satisfied yet. I want more contrast and freshness. So I am going to put him away for a few days, and take him out again next week. To see him with fresh eyes. On to the next [...]

Sterrenwacht 3
I get my stamps out. Today I want to do the lettering first, although I usually save it for the last. This time though I have chosen a pretty weird combination of colours and I am not sure if I am going to pull it off. The lettering will be crucial in tying it all [...]

Sterrenwacht 2: video
Yesterday I selected which pictures to use of the spot I am portraying – de Sterrenwacht in Utrecht. I printed them and attached a few to the panel. I want to make some changes to the guy before adhering him. So that if I screw up, which happens a lot, I don’t have to start [...]

Sterrenwacht: process
I finished doing my taxes and lots of other chores so finally I get to start on the long planned new mixed media series, to be made into prints. Yay! The first one will be about Utrecht. One of the loveliest places around town is the semi-circular park built on the former town walls. And [...]

It’s July – so let’s make a Christmas Card
Yes I am early, but what the heck. This idea was on my list for a long time. And now I made it. Family holidays. Sigh. Do you too remember many a Christmas meal that went like this: Mother: Tada… and here is the hare! Father: Ah. Children: (deadly quiet) Father: (takes a bite) Er… [...]

Sewing leather on a 1928 Singer
My modern electronic Pfaff sewing machine can not sew leather. According to the manual it ought to, but it keeps breaking down. Its fine mechanism is too delicate, I have to have it repaired all the time. So I tried my grandmother’s antique Singer Sewing machine, that had not been used for ages. My grandmother [...]

They are being created by a New York photographer, Jamie Beck, and her partner Kevin Burg. This is their website. I fell in love with those pictures, like everyone else who has seen [...]

The woodcut / lino look: shortcuts
From Goody O’Grumpity On a recent visit to the Mazza Museum (which collects original children’s book illustrations) in Findlay, Ohio I discovered Ashley Wolff’s linocut Childrens book illustrations. In Goody O’Grumpity (1994) and in Who’s coming to our house (1988) she hand coloured her linocuts with watercolour. She does it beautifully – if you click [...]

My studio
I promised Chum to post a few pics of my studio. In my mind I don’t call it a studio, it is more of a study. This is the room I keep all of my art books plus a lot of my husbands. It was furnished as an office when I was [...]

Finishing the Sketchbook Project, 7
I have sworn to finish the Sketchbook today. Two more pages needed moderation. This hand did not feel small enough for a child’s hand to me so I tweaked it – First I cut off the attached apples.. then I scaled it down a little. Now the apple was looking more like a lemon so [...]

The Sketchbook Project 6
All over the world contributors to The Sketchbook Project must be trying to get their book finished in time, as it has to be sent off on Jan. 15. I had a few hours to spend on it today and looking over what I had done so far I decided to start on the table [...]

The Sketchbook Project 5
I did get a few hours of work in today, after all. I have started eraser cutting the little hands that will take the apples away. Every now and then I wonder if I am not putting too much time into this project.. and how many pages I am going to end up with – [...]

The Sketchbook Project 4
More screenshots at the end of this day.. Doing 5 hands and apples plus the ever increasing heap of apples in the bowl is a lot of work. So far I have made stamps for 3 hands and 5 different amounts of apples. Wow. I put some shade under the bowl but I am not [...]

The sketchbook project 2
I get up early this morning, all awake, to find out it is not even 7 o’clock. Everyone is still asleep. So I watch a few episodes of Desperate Housewives before I set to work. I think I am allowed – after all these are holidays! I made a new story yesterday but it feels [...]

The sketchbook Project is now mine too..
Months ago I signed up for the wonderful Sketchbook Project. A New York / Brooklyn Library initiative – thousands of participants fill little Moleskine sketchbooks and send them in. These books will go on a tour. And they will be scanned so they will be accessible online. They have to be in the mail by [...]

Cutting paper animals
All of a sudden it was time for new business cards. This saturday afternoon I had fun designing and cutting and folding them – and digging deeply into my stack of pre- cut kraftpaper. Got my Christmas cards all written and mailed too – but the Dutch postal service TNT is on strike. It is [...]
