Art Journaling / mixed media Workshops

Art journaling workshop, 2011

What is art journaling?

Art journaling is well known in the US, where I learned about it for the first time, a couple of years ago. An art journal is an illustrated journal. Art journalers often work in books, but you can just as well use sheets of paper, or canvas, or whatever you fancy.

There are many techniques used for illustrating, and often several are used at the same time – hence the term mixed media.

And here is the good news: you don’t need to know how to draw to do it. You can use collage, transfer techniques, stamps, altered photo’s – and many more things to express your own emotions, thoughts or experiences. Actually, art journaling is not really about the outcome – it is about the process.

Other than writing a diary in words, as many of us did when we were young, lamenting our hardships and keeping infinite track of our growing pains, an art journal is mostly silent. It is about visual imagery, combined with may be a few well chosen words.

It does not involve analysing your thoughts and feelings. It allows you to express them in a visual way, spontaneously.

Which is a totally different way of dealing with them.

Most of all, it’s fun!

What is the workshop like?

Of course I will first explain about art journaling and the techniques we will use. There will be a stack of books for everyone to browse and get some great ideas.

Also I will provide you with all materials needed – paper, paint, brushes, glue, magazines, stamps, ink, tranfer materials etc.

Then we will do some loosening up exercises before I’ll give you a choice of three prompts to work from. I will explain and help with the techniques, give lots of tips and answer all of your questions.

All participants will make their own mixed media piece to take home – and we will discuss each one of them. I find that one of the best things about these workshops is actually the sharing of ideas and experiences – and the pleasure that brings.

How does it work?

A workshop is three hours long, mornings or afternoons.

I will give them at your house, so you don’t need to travel. The maximum amount of participants is 10 people.

A three hour workshop is priced at € 350 – so 10 people each would pay € 35. This includes all materials. Depending on where you live there will be a travel fee.

To sign up for a workshop, just click the Buy Now button. Upon receipt of your payment I will get back to you to schedule a convenient date and time.

Too bad your class doesn’t include airfare to San Francisco or count me in! Looks like a great class. If you do come to visit next year (I hope!) I’ll take you to the most awesome supply store we have here.
