10 things I expected out of life when I was 10 but did not get

Kitty Kilian, ‘And you think YOUR family’s dysfunctional?’, mixed media, 10 x 15 cm / 4 x 6

When I was ten I expected lots of things to happen when I grew up – these are the things that didn’t:

  1. I would be smashingly beautiful
  2. I would be very, very sensible
  3. I would marry in a white gown  (when the time came I refused to do so)
  4. I would have lots of children and all of us would always be immensely happy (in the end two sufficed)
  5. I would live in a huge white mansion surrounded by gardens and have two cleaning maids (I know, I was naive at 10)
  6. We would eat sweets all day long
  7. We would watch television all day long
  8. We would never take walks, and certainly never in forests on Sunday afternoons
  9. I would be a famous novelist
  10. I would never grow old

Oh my, I wish I could hang this one in my house but I think the family would disapprove! Oh yes, we were naive back then at ten. Though I did know I wanted to be an artist, at least I got that part right!

It’s funny how we expect to be when we are grown up, but interesting how life turns out differently. I think I thought I would be an international show jumper (quite hard without a horse) and for sure would be married with kids (both of which I have consciously declined to do), I would never have imagined I could be an artist, that was so out of my experience.

Fun list. Nice to reflect upon. I know I thought life would be easy (actually I think I carried that one all the way through to Uni until my parents pointed out that as I wanted to move out of home I would also need to get a job to pay rent! I what?!) . I too realise lots of things I wanted then I have also conciously avoided now.   I still eat sweets all day long though – and it still upsets my dentist ; )

Check 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10. None came true, I’m starting to doubt nr 10. Tried 7 for a while, didn’t like it in the end. I’m trying again with the internet. For now it holds up. I was wrong on 8. This post reminds me of this picture:
